Our History
The Hiram Walters Health Centre, located in Sydenham, St. Catherine, is operated by the Health Ministries Department of Central Jamaica Conference (CJC) of Seventh-day Adventists. It has responded to the pressing needs of Spanish Town residents since the late 1980s by providing health and wellness services. Construction began in June of 1985 on lands purchased from the Government of Jamaica through the Ministry of Construction after CJC partnered with the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and Adventist Relief Agency (ADRA). The Health Centre was named in honour of a stalwart, visionary pioneer, Elder Hiram S. Walters, a former leader in the Central Jamaica Conference, who was very instrumental in developing the Conference and making a huge impact on the Spanish Town citizenry.
On January 9, 1989, when the Centre opened for operation, the following services became available:
1. Family Planning
2. Medical Clinics
3. Antenatal
4. Dressings
5. Counselling Services
6. Educational Talks
The fee structure then was $5.00 - $20.00, but those who could not pay were never refused service. We were able to provide some services for free as volunteerism played a significant role then, as the doctors were volunteers. These partnerships have dissipated as the demand for services dictates that we operate a more professional centre that caters to the needs of a diverse but stable patient population.
The H.S. Walters Health Centre continues to be a beacon of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in the Central Jamaica Conference. The reach is extended beyond the boundaries of the immediate location of Sydenham. The Health Centre is administered by a Health Board, which is chaired by the President of the Conference.
The services include medical, dental, laboratory, counselling and alternative treatments. The team serves five days per week for medical and four days for dental, and one day each week for laboratory work, medical missionary advice and counselling. The last addition is a dental laboratory to produce dentures and other appliances for the mouth.
There has been a steady growth of our clientele as we extend our offerings to those we serve at the centre and the community. With the assistance of our volunteers for outreach initiatives, our services are offered free to our community members.
