Over 100 Children Ministry leaders and assistants, as well as Vacation Bible School (VBS) coordinators, were trained and certified to minister in an intentional way to our children, at a Children Ministry Leaders Workshop and Consultation. The event, hosted by the Seventh-day Adventist Church, Central Jamaica Conference (CJC), was held at the May Pen S.D.A. Church on February 4, 2024.
Focusing on the theme "I Will Go for More in 2024," the workshop began with an impactful devotion led by Pastor Howard Grant. The Youth, Children, and Adolescent Ministry Director, Pastor Dwayne Scott, set the tone with opening remarks and prayer, emphasizing the importance of reaching new heights in the coming year.
The program featured a diverse range of sessions, starting with a presentation by Sis. Aletha Francis on understanding the developmental stages of children. This foundational knowledge is crucial for effectively catering to the unique needs of young minds within the church community.
Ms. Joanie James delved into the vital topics of self-esteem and bullying in Jamaica, shedding light on the challenges faced by children in today's society.
Ms. Jaquline Bennett took the stage to share insights on planning an effective children's ministry within the local church. Her expertise provided practical guidance for implementing impactful initiatives that resonate with the younger generation.
Dr. Loraine Vernal, Director of Children and Adolescents Ministries, JAMU, highlighted the roles and responsibilities of children leaders, emphasizing the pivotal role they play in shaping the spiritual and personal growth of the next generation. “The work of the children leader is not ordinary; you are the guiding lights in nurturing the spiritual and personal growth of the next generation. You hold the key to unlocking compassion, integrity, and a deeper connection with the divine, shaping tomorrow's leaders with wisdom and grace," said Vernal.
The workshop also included a talk-back session with Pastor Dwayne Scott, addressing the mission, vision, and responding to queries from participants. The event concluded with the presentation of certificates, a vote of thanks, and a closing prayer, capturing the spirit of unity and commitment among the participants.
The Children Ministry Leaders Workshop and Consultation drew participants from across the three parishes, provided valuable knowledge and resources and served as a platform for networking and collaboration among leaders, dedicated to nurturing the spiritual development of children in Central Jamaica. As the participants left inspired, armed with newfound insights, the event marked a significant step toward building a stronger and more vibrant children's ministry in the region.
