NCU, Mandeville, Jamaica - “There is a difference between education and schooling; in as much as you can be an ardent church member and not saved, you can sit on the school campuses and be schooled and not educated”.

The words of keynote speaker Dr Maurice Smith, educational consultant with the World Bank and former Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, resounded as he made his address at the opening ceremony of Northern Caribbean University’s (NCU’s) Research Week 2017.

This year, Research Week will run from February 6 to 9 on the NCU Main Campus in Mandeville, Manchester, under the theme, Innovations through Research: Mission possible.

One of the goals of Research Week 2017 is to create solutions to societal issues in an attempt to improve the lives of all citizens. Dr Smith urged students to go forth and research problems that have not yet been solved and not give solutions to issues that have already been addressed.

President of the university Dr Lincoln Edwards believes that “NCU is constantly looking for challenges within our society so that we can find solutions to them and what better way to find solutions than through research”.

All the colleges will share their research and findings throughout the week. On the first day the College of Business and Management hosted the Current Trends and Issues in Business and Hospitality Management Conference. The College of Natural and Applied Sciences, Allied Health and Nursing hosted their 18th annual Science Symposium on February 7 and hosted their Biennial Nursing Research Conference on February 8.

The College of Humanities, Behavioural and Social Sciences and the College of Education and Leadership, also hosted symposiums on Wednesday, February 8.

On the final day, February 9, there will be the School of Religion and Theology Symposium, after which the Closing Ceremony will bring the curtains down on the week of activities.
