The command of Matthew 5:16 to “let your light so shine before men so that they may see your good works and glorify your Father which is in heaven” is one that Ivorine Graham of the Bagbie Seventh-day Adventist Church takes personal.
Mr. Melvin Graham, 76, husband of Ivorine, 76, said he decided to give his life to God because of the life his wife lived.
“She has been such an inspiration to me over the years,” said Melvin.
Ivorine Graham was baptized in 1993 at the Bagbie Seventh-day Adventist Church by Pastor Mobrey Lewis. That same year she married Melvin Graham and the two have since resided in Hamwalk, St. Catherine.
Hamwalk is 6 miles from the Bagbie Seventh-day Adventist Church, but the distance did not hamper her involvement in the life of her church.
Every Saturday she walked twelve miles (both ways) to church. She also walked the said distance to attend other services of the church.
“I hardly miss any programme at the church, sometimes my journey takes me as far as Troja to crusade”, she said.
This journey was not one Ivorine would walk alone. Her husband Melvin Graham accompanied her (part of the way to church) in the morning and would meet her part of the way on her way home for 25 years.
“I followed her every sabbath for 25 years, though I wasn’t ready, I admired her as an exemplary Christian,” said Melvin.
The commitment of this couple caught the attention of Conrade Graham, Pastor of the Bagbie district of Seventh-day Adventist Churches. Pastor Graham decided to organize an evangelistic campaign in the community of Hamwalk.
“I was touched by the commitment of sister Graham and the support of her husband and I thought of a way to make it easier for her to attend church, immediately establishing a church in Hamwalk through an evangelistic initiative came to mind,” said Pastor Graham.
“The evangelistic series was held November 11, 2018 – December 1, with evangelist Glen Heaven and resulted in the baptism of 6 precious souls, one of those persons was Melvin Graham", said Pastor Graham.
Today both Ivorine and Melvin Graham are members of the Hamwalk Seventh-day Adventist Company.
