Since Monday, October 9, 2017, a team of 17 youths (14 from Central Jamaica Conference [CJC] and three from North Jamaica Conference) led by CJC Youth Director Kevan Barnaby arrived in Orlando, Florida on a mission to carry out various community services projects in the South-Eastern Florida Conference territory.
This trip to Florida by CJC youths is fulfilling a commitment that was made by the Youth Director of South-Eastern Florida Conference (SEC), Pastor Prince Lewis when he came to Jamaica earlier in 2017.
In March 2017, a team of 12 youths of SEC and their Youth Director traveled to Jamaica to participate in OSAY (Operation Save a Youth). At that time, Pastor Lewis said he would love to host youths from CJC on a mission trip to his Conference.
Since arriving in Orlando, the Jamaican youths have engaged in several projects and empowerment activities.
The first project undertaken was the beautification of the lawn at the main auditorium on the SEC’s campsite on Tuesday, October 10, 2017. This garden is done in preparation for the reopening of the auditorium; as it is undergoing remodelling.
For the rest of the time, the team is expected to carry out the following projects:
- They will help to remove debris from a home that hosts several mentally ill senior citizens. This debris was left there during the passage of hurricane Harvey.
- Removal and repair of the playground floor of the Miami Union Academy in Miami, Florida.
With only a few days to go before the completion of this mission trip, the youths are now preparing to participate in a Pathfinder Rally in Miami, Florida for the weekend of October 13-14. Pastor Kevan Barnaby, Youth Director of CJC, is scheduled to speak at the Rally.
According to Pastor Barnaby, “The commitment of the Central Jamaica Conference’s Administration to Youth empowerment and development must be commended.” Pastor Barnaby said he is grateful for the financial assistance of the CJC Administration that made it possible for the youths be part of this mission trip.
For the visitors, it was not all work and no play. On Wednesday, October 11, 2017, the Staff of SEC (including the Administrators and Directors) treated the team from CJC to the Disney Animal Kingdom. The entire day was spent fellowshipping through rap session, dining and games.
The team is expected to travel back to Jamaica on Tuesday, October 17, 2017.
