CJC Ordains Eight Pastors to the Gospel Ministry

Published: 03-05-2022 |

Eight Central Jamaica Conference (CJC) pastors joined the cadre of believers set apart for gospel ministry on Saturday, April 30, 2022, during an ordination ceremony held at the Portmore Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) church.

The pastors are Rayon Brown, Itamar James, Kaymar Lewis, Jason Miller, Kevin Murray, Kemel O’Hara, Carlton Richards, and Joel Shillingford.

They are now invested with the full authority to teach the truth, administer the Lord’s Supper, baptize, plant and organize churches, guide, and nurture members and provide general services to the congregation such as officiating marriages.

Over 1000 persons were in attendance, including church and civic leaders.

The service commenced with a beautiful procession of ordained ministers from across the Jamaica Union Conference, led by officiating ministers Pastor Everett Brown, President of the Jamaica Union (JAMU), Dr. Meric Walker Executive Secretary, JAMU, Dr. Joseph Smith Ministerial Secretary, Pastor Nevail Barrett, President CJC, Pastor Howard Grant-Langley Executive Secretary, CJC and Pastor Daniel Pink Ministerial Secretary, CJC.

Other special features included the presentation of gifts to the pastors and their wives, the laying of the hand ceremony, and a special prayer of consecration.

During this prayer, the ordained pastor placed their hand on the head of the ordinand, and they asked, "God to bestow his blessing upon them.”

While this ceremony of laying on of hands added no new grace or virtual qualification, it was the action of the church setting its seal of approval upon the work of God, and a public recognition to the church at large that they had been chosen by the Holy Spirit for a special work.

Pastor Everett Brown, President of the Jamaica Union (JAMU) was the main speaker at this solemn service and commended the CJC administration, for this timely initiative.

“God is well pleased, started Pastor Brown, as we join Him in setting you aside as we serve the SDA church.”

He also highlighted that being pastor is a noble profession.
“The life of a pastor involves preaching the word, making disciples, and always modeling Christ in every area of life,” said Brown.

He, however, cautioned the pastors to balance their ministry, warning them of the importance of family.

“Your children must appreciate and want to be like you, spend time with family. As you seek to prepare another man's vineyard you need to take care of your own. Never lose sight that your family is given to you by God and that you have a responsibility to be good stewards of them, said Brown.”

He concluded his address with a reminder that the call to serve God's church has always been a privilege and that pastors should be sound and represent God before the people as sound men.

“I challenge you to continue to feed on God's word and grow then go forward and His grace will give you power, transform you to bear fruit. Because the one who calls you will keep you and sustain you. When your ministry ends may you hear well done.

Pastor Joel Shillingford who expressed thanks to the Administration of the JAMU and CJC on behalf of all eight newly ordained ministers, pledged their commitment to Christ’s mission.

“We are grateful, and we are so happy to be part of this service, “he continued “with hearts filled with gratitude, joy, and humility we pledge to our wives our continued love towards them and the nurturing of our family, and to you our members we are going to increase our professionalism and our hard work to you as we serve Christ together.”
